Outlaw Star episode | |
Japanese Airdate | Unaired |
An unaired pilot episode of Outlaw Star is included as a bonus feature with many of the anime's home video releases, specifically various DVD and Blu-ray versions. This pilot episode contains many scenes that would later be reused in the first episode of the series, "Outlaw World".
Synopsis[]
The pilot is a montage of different scenes narrated by Melfina, in which she thanks Gene Starwind for being there for her. Portions of the narration are done in the future tense, with Melfina implying that she will meet Gene "soon." Several characters, including Jim Hawking, Aisha Clan-Clan, Suzuka, and an early unmasked design for Hazanko, appear in the pilot in non-speaking roles. The pilot also includes the appearance of an unnamed woman and a pink rabbit-like creature accompanying Jim. The pilot ends with the English text "'Outlaw Star' - Coming Soon!".
Notes[]

Gene's unnamed grappler combat device featured a different design in the pilot, which later appears in "Outlaw World."
- A 1996 copyright year is shown underneath the logo, the same year the manga began serialization.
- The home releases that feature the pilot do not contain any further production information related to the pilot.
- The pilot is scored to the track "Flight."
- Melfina, voiced by Ayako Kawasumi, is the only character with a speaking role in the pilot.
- An ornate pistol appears in the pilot, framed similarly to the shot of the Caster used in the series opening. The framing and later reuse of the background art suggest that it may be an early design for the Caster.
- The unnamed woman in the pilot does not appear in the series, indicating she may have been an early conceptual design for the character Hilda.
- The pink creature shown alongside Jim in the pilot is colored similarly to the pink Gilliam II maintenance bot featured in the series, indicating it may have had a similar role.
- Suzuka is featured with a slightly different design, with large samurai armor-like shoulder pads.
- In the pilot, Gene's unnamed grappler combat control device uses a different design which appears to be a headset. This shot would later be reused in the series' first episode, "Outlaw World," despite not matching the design of the device used later in the series.
- A fan-produced English dub of the pilot, using Melfina's English voice actor Emilie Brown, was released on May 6, 2019.
